Research Associates Scheme
The primary aim of our Research Associates scheme is to provide scholars
and practitioners with the opportunity to undertake a period of study at the
Centre for the International Politics of Conflict, Rights and Justice.
Research Associates may be on sabbatical leave from their own
organisations or sponsored directly by other organisations. They may be at any
stage of their career: embarking on immediate post-doctoral research,
undertaking a mid-career break or pursuing an opportunity for late-career reflection
and writing.
It is anticipated that Research Associates will play an active part in
the intellectual life of the Centre, especially through giving guest seminars,
leading discussion groups and allowing research students working on areas of
relevance to their interests to consult them.
The Centre is able to grant a maximum of six Research Associates per
year. Applications submitted to the scheme will be considered by the
Co-directors and will need formal approval from the Department of Politics and International Studies and the Faculty of the
Law and Social Sciences at SOAS.
Practical arrangements
Timing: Research
Associates may start at any time during the year, subject to agreement
between each individual fellow and the Centre.
Duration: Fellowships
will normally run for between three and twelve months, but longer visits may,
by exception, be approved.
Status in the School: The title of
Research Associate is given to individuals from outside the School associated
with School departments, institutes and Centres. Research Associates have
access to the facilities of SOAS.
Funding: The Centre
hopes, in future, to be able to offer fully funded fellowships to human rights and humanitarian practitioners and researchers who might otherwise be unable to come to SOAS. At
present, however, applications can only be considered from those who already
have (or expect to have) adequate financial support.
Computers and desk space: Research
Associates will be provided with a SOAS login and email address, enabling
them to use computer facilities at the School (for example, in the SOAS
library). The Centre cannot guarantee desk space for Research Associates.
Accommodation: the School is not
able to make any arrangements for living accommodation for visitors.
